| Storydrama Residencies What is a Storydrama Residency? A Storydrama Residency combines storytelling, drama, writing and science to transform folktales, youth fiction and non-fiction into living works of art. The Trickster Tales Alive Package uses traditional tales from around the world as its literature foundation with an emphasis on creative writing, acting and story structure. The Anyone Can Garden Package was created based on youth fiction and non-fiction with an emphasis on plant science, kinesthetic activities and collaborative problem solving. The One Day Residency involves two to four classes in interactive performance workshops and culminates in an assembly at the end of the day featuring these students. This program combines storytelling and drama to transform
folktales and youth fiction into living works of art. Students do more than listen to stories; they become the heroes, the tricksters, the forest and the wind. |
Young writers are inspired by classroom activities to create their own stories (language arts). Students showcase the written work of their classmates as they interpret their words while acting (public speaking). Students use their bodies, not just their voices, to help tell stories (kinesthetic learning). Students incorporate biological facts about animals and plants into their study of folktales (science). Kids develop empathy by trying on different roles and points of view (social emotional learning). |
Classes use maps and geographical information about folktale settings to help put the tales into global context (geography). Groups listen to folktales from around the world including Africa and Mexico (language arts). Kids learn about different cultures' foods and tools within the accessible context of story (social studies). |
